The THIRD Story [30]

XXX. Universe

This coming week is gonna be intense.
The month-long Division Sports Fest is drawing to an epic finale by the end of next week, building just the right amount of excitement among the spectators. Since we won the crown in the Cheerleading department, I can pretty much say that we have the momentum advantage, adding to the fact that we are this year's host.

Also, there's this annual search for the Ambassadress of Sports that I am thrilled about. I can't wait to flaunt what I got and leave everyone breathless as I walk down that prestigious stage. Sure as hell eyes will pop out of their sockets.

-and Suzie is found guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Punishment? Two weeks suspension plus one month community service when she gets back. Lia said with a grin, tapping the keyboard lightly.

I wonder what her Scandinavian friends would say once they find out what she did. Kat mused, bringing her cup of coffee to her lips.

Poor Yza. She shook her head then smiled after. But poorer Suzie. She thinks she can outwit us? Not a chance. One click on the mouse then, poof! Your blog post published successfully! She beamed as she turned her laptop facing us.

Kat scooted closer to read Lia's entry, smiling and nodding to herself. Pretty neat. No one can ever suspect that the real culprits are enjoying a nice cup of coffee at the moment.

Except for one. I almost blurted out. I still haven't told them that Seth knew and I actually don't think it's a good idea. These girls would just go frantic. Besides, Seth is on our side and he won't do anything that can harm us so there's really no point on telling them. I can handle it by myself.

J, you okay? You're unusally quiet today.

Yah. Of course I am. I said then plastered a smile on my face. I'm just thinking about the search. I can't wait for Saturday, actually.

You know better than to get nervous, right? Lia sneered, looking at me with her gray cat eyes.

Shut up. I rolled my eyes and ran a hand through my hair. I suddenly felt anxious and had to shake my head to clear my mind before gazing out the window.

Defense guys! James shouted from the bench, watching his team play without him. I took the seat behind him and tapped his back. Oh, Jasmine. He glanced at me then smiled before turning back his attention to his team.

The captain is not practicing? That's unfair. I joked and he chuckled, shaking his head lightly. He faced me then, resting his right arm to the railing.

I just got substituted. This might just be a practice game but I'm not slacking off.

Really, huh? I bantered and he howled like he never had done before. He glimpsed at the court again, raising his hand for a basketball signal or whatever before looking at me again.

How's your preparation for the search?

It's doing good. Kat and Lia are very helpful and supportive as always.

James nodded. I see. I know you can win the title. I have the utmost faith in you, Queen Bee. He smiled, but his eyes suddenly dropped to the floor.

What's wrong? I asked, putting a hand on his arm. He looked at me and searched my eyes for a matter of seconds before heaving a sigh.

I'm just worried about the game tomorrow. We're down by a game and it's just a short three-game championship series. He turned his attention again to his team before continuing. Princeton High is a very strong team. And I'm sure Seth would certainly be pleased to finish the series tomorrow.

Oh-oh. Is this really James the captain speaking? I've never heard him say something like that with THAT hopeless edge on his voice.

It's been two weeks since they first faced the Falcons and it all boiled down to a crucial jump shot that didn't go in for our team. I know James is taking all the blame to himself, and even if they won their next games convincingly - with big leads I tell you, he still can't seem to get over their first lost. And now that our team is on the finals against Princeton, James is somewhat losing his sheer confidence after yesterday's defeat.

You can't be that hopeless James. You're one great guy and so as everyone in your team. You guys can still bounce back tomorrow. I said, hoping to boost his confidence. As Paulo Coelho said in his world famous 'The Alchemist', When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.

Is that your quote to live by? That's why you always get what you wanted? He smiled genuinely and I found myself with no witty reply to say. I bit my tongue and silently cursed myself.

James stood up when Coach Vince called him for a substitution. He looked at me before crossing the court and patted my head.

Thank you for the peptalk Ms. Cheerleader. I'd keep that in mind. I sure hope the universe will really conspire..for me to achieve it. His eyes flickered to the entrance of the gym and he smiled. I followed where his eyes landed and my face pulled up to a scowl in an instant.

It was Yza.
