The THIRD Story [21]

XXI. Rumble

Princeton High won
convincingly against Lesse Mont with an 83-69 record. Seth earned himself the best player of the game and was congratulated by a bunch of fan girls. James started to leave without glancing at my way and I almost followed him.

Hey, are you not going to congratulate me? An obnoxious voice said behind me. I looked back and saw him waiting with a smile on his face.

Why should I? I crossed my arms in front of me. Technically, you're still our team's opponent, you see?

Point taken. But are you not gonna thank me atleast? I told you my cousin would be watching, and he did. He said all too proudly.

Yeah right. I snorted. I bet you should also thank me for watching such a boring game. I said, unamazed. He disregarded the comment then started smiling widely at me.

Sure sure. He said, his eyes full of pure joy. But lemme just thank you the proper way. He then stepped towards me, his arms spread out like he's going to hug me but he didn't. Instead, in one swift movement, he kissed my cheek and left me speechless. Thank you. He said, looking straight into my eyes and I felt lost in those green gems again.

You just didn't!! In an instant, a fist landed straight to Seth's face, knocking him to the ground. I stood there, shocked with the furious James.

Seth stood to his feet, returning the deadly glare James was giving him. Now what was that for?! James looked at me but didn't answer, his face was still rigid with disgust. Oh, I get it. You're jealous. Seth laughed without humor. Wait, you're not even her boyfriend right? Then why are you acting all too--

Shut up! James lunged for him again, but Seth was quick enough to dodge and give him a fist of his own. The crowd reacted then, but no one wanted to stop the fight because they all seemed to be enjoying the action.

Stop it! James! Stop it! Someone shouted from the distance. She was in a half-running state when I caught her arm. She looked startled but was determined to get out of my grip.

Where do you think you're going?

Let go of me. I have to stop them.

Wow. That's pretty heroic huh? I said sarcastically, pushing her aside with such force that almost made her fall to the ground. Little weakling.

She breathed deeply, then looked at me bitterly. Are you just gonna stand there and watch them? Don't you even want to do something to stop them from fighting..over you?

It's none of your business! I snapped. This girl's talking too much. I didn't tell them to fight over me, so I really don't need to stop them. Neither do you.

You're way too selfish. She said defeatedly. If you will not do anything, then I will. She started towards them but I gripped her arm again.

You're not going anywhere little skank. I said through clenched teeth, squinting at her.

We were caught up in our own tug of war when a whistle was blown from a distance. I scanned to see where it came from, and my eyes strained to that huge guy running towards Seth and James who didn't even hear the warning. The watching crowd disappeared one by one, leaving the two brawling guys in the hands of the disciplinary figure.

Boys! Get off of each other! The man said, putting each hand on the guys' chests. It took him a few seconds to finally stop the two. Guidance office, now! James glared at Seth, but the latter just smirked at him. The two followed the disciplinary figure with a safe distance from each other, Seth trailing a little behind. He glanced right back at me and mouthed something like, You owe me.

Yza ran towards them, muttering something I didn't catch. I left the gym with a satisfied smile on my face.

**

You promise to tell us everything tomorrow?

I will! I just need to do something really important now, ok? Bye. I slid my phone shut and placed it inside my bag.

If there's one place he'll be most likely at in times like this, it'll be in the back building. I tucked my hair behind my ear and checked the kit that I brought with me - first aid kit. With the beating he got from Seth, he surely needs someone to take care of those bruises since he really doesn't rely on the nurses stationed in the school clinic.

Nearing his usual spot in the deserted building, I heard murmurs which made me stop on my tracks. The voices got distinct and I instantly knew who's who.

That biatch. I hissed irritatedly.

I continued walking, discreetly this time so they wouldn't notice that a third party was watching them. I hid myself behind a wall, squinting at how close they were sitting next to each other. Yza was applying something on James' face when he suddenly grabbed her hand, steadying it on his cheek. She looked at him adoringly; his eyes were closed and his breathing was deep. When his eyes opened, he brought her hand to his lips and kissed it. Warmth gathered in my eyes, making it hard to see clearly.

Spying again? Startled, I lost the kit from my grip. It landed with a loud thud, spilling its contents on the ground. And they obviously heard it.
