The THIRD Story [28]

XXVIII. Face Off

Hey Jas. Why are you smiling like that?
Lia snapped her fingers in front of me, jarring my thoughts back to the present.

I..I just remembered something funny. Right. It was downright funny. I faked a laugh then shook my head lightly.

Really? Or are you reminiscing your date with Seth last Saturday? Kat teased, showing off her pearl whites as she smiled.

Shut up. It's not even a date.

If you say so. Lia said as if closing the topic but her tone suggested otherwise.

Okay to be honest, I was really thinking of our getaway last weekend and I don't even know why I was reminiscing the part when we rode the cable car and the way he tamed the rowdy mare Samantha and the way he held my hand when we walked down the Eco Trail and I can't even begin to explain why I felt utterly happy and excited and comftable and safe and at ease the whole time that we were together.

Thank you for today. I had a great time. Seth said when he pulled to a stop in front of our house. I huffed an 'uh huh' so he won't notice that I felt the same way too. See you on Wednesday. He smiled as I felt my eyebrow raised in confusion.

Wednesday?

I hope you're not forgetting that your team and my team will be battling on the court on that day. Seth said, and I had to think hard to confirm that he was not bluffing. I nodded a few seconds late then smiled.

Goodluck to your team then. I'm pretty sure our guys will give you a hard time. I said confidently.

We'll see. You know I don't give up easily. I always win. Seth smiled again, his green eyes focused on me. And I always get what I wanted, like you.

Wednesday came so fast and I just found myself and the rest of the squad in the locker room, waiting for the halftime buzzer so we can go out and start cheering for the team.

Do you have any score update? I asked Lia who was busy tying her hair in a childlike pigtail.

Sorry Jas, I don't have any. We all haven't been out since the opening buzzer. I suddenly felt anxious. I hope our team's doing good. We can't afford to lose.

Relax J. James and the team can handle Princeton just right. We're the Tigers, remember? Falcons are no better than us. Kat put a reassuring hand on my shoulder but it didn't quite have the effect that I was expecting.

Come on Jasmine. Don't think about it. What you have to focus on is your cheer for this halftime. Just, calm down you bitch!

BUZZZZ!

Oh, that's our cue! Lia said, all smiles. Line up now bitches. We have to show the Falcons what we got! She sounded excited and I can't blame her for that. Remember her ex Tom who dumped her for some low life skank? Well, Tom is part of Princeton's basketball team.

We marched out of the locker room with our heads held up high, smiling at the crowd who waved and praised us.

The Falcons were the first to go so we had to watch their five-minute lame performance before we set the court on fire. I never intended to look at the scoreboard but my head just reeled where it is located and my eyes widened with shock when I saw the score.

43-35 in favor of Princeton. I glanced around but no one seemed to pay attention to the score for the meantime. From the corner of my eye, I saw Seth staring at me with his familiar grin. Wait. Why is he here? Isn't he supposed to be in their dug out to talk things like their offense or defense or whatever? I glared at him then but he just laughed and mouthed something.

Break a leg.

The Falcons' performance ended and I plastered a smile on my face as we made our way towards the court. I pushed away the image of Seth's mocking face and concentrated on the more important thing now. The Tigers are here for a great show.

Did it roll around the rim?
And did it go right in?
Uh huh! (clap clap)
Okay (clap clap) Go Tigers!

We're 1, not 2, not 3, not 4
We're gonna win, not lose, not tie that score
We're on top, not bottom, not in between
So Tigers fans get on your feet and scream

**

Tigers!!
The crowd cheered as the 3rd quarter comes to play. James and the rest of the team are trailing by 8pts while Seth was leading his team with 15pts to his name.

I hate to say this but Seth is a real good player. Kat said beside me, her voice was of the admiring one.

I couldn't agree more. Lia said in that same admiring tone. See how he collapses that defense our team puts on him?

Not only he escapes from the defense but he gets to score too. Like that! As if on cue, Seth finished with a lay-up, leaving his defender in the air.

I never knew you girls are such a fan. I commented and they stopped clapping.

Is someone getting jealous here? Kat teased, smiling at Lia.

Don't worry Jas. We're just appreciating his skills. He's still all yours.

Shut up. I retorted but they just laughed at me.

The game continued with much intensity and the crowd got louder when our team closed in the lead.

James Reedley for three! Everyone roared and stood up from their seats when James hit the three, taking the lead from the Falcons who instantly called the time out. The team gave James body taps and high fives as he approached the bench.

What a way to get the lead. I mumbled, smiling as I looked at the game clock. 1:38 remaining.
